Jack Russell Terriers - Information - History

Jack Russell Terriers originated in England in the 19th century. The Reverend John Russell (1795-1883) bred the dog for hunting. A foxhunting lover, he strived to produce a breed versatile enough to trace the fox and small enough to drive it out of its den. John Russell used a terrier named Trump as a foundation bitch. This dog is thought to be the main ancestor of all Jack Russell Terriers.

The breed is widely distributed in Europe and the United States. Breeders throughout the world tried to emphasize its hunting qualities and breed their dogs for their working abilities rather than for looks. As the result, the Jack Russell Terrier breed may display various appearance characteristics. Yet, its personality traits are always the same. The breed is active, intelligent, and strong-willed.

Since Jack Russell Terriers are easy to train and look after, they are used primarily as working dogs. Jack Russells can often be seen on farms. They help to control the number of vermin in stables and similar areas. The breed has become a frequent star of commercials and movies. It will suffice to say that the Jack Russell acquired popularity in many countries thanks to some famous movies, such as "Mask" and "Clean Slate."

Like with other breeds of dog whose popularity rocketed due to movie success, the Jack Russell Terrier had to face a number of problems. Charmed by a cute dog, children have talked their parents into keeping a Jack, which did not always turn out to be a rewarding experience. The Jack Russell needs quite a firm hand in training and is not a dog for everyone.

Jack Russell Terriers - Information - Breed Preservation

In 1992, the United Kennel Club accepted the breed on the request of numerous Jack Russell Terrier breeders. However, the Jack Russell Terrier Club of America (JRTCA), the largest breed club and registry, has opposed strongly to the idea. Club officials and Jack Russell owners dreaded to think what could happen to the breed after it had been registered with an all-breed registry. The consequences might be dramatic, since breeding for looks could deprive the Jack Russell Terrier its working abilities.

Hence, the JRTCA does not endorse the registration and does not approve of breeders who are affiliated with the UKC. A special campaign has been launched that aims at preserving the breed in its pure form and does not allow any room for the destruction of Jack Russell Terriers.
