Jack Russell Terriers are bred mostly for their working abilities. They can be used for hunting, tracking, guarding, police and military work, and some canine sports. The Jack Russell Terrier, though, is gaining popularity as a show dog.
Some breeders lay stress on looks, rather than the breed's ability to perform its original functions. So-called "true lovers" of the "true Jack Russell Terrier type" do not always favor these practices. What makes some breeders opposed to breeding the Jack Russell Terrier for conformation? The answer is evident. They fear that the breed used for decades as a working dog, will eventually lose its original qualities, as was the case with many other dog breeds. The debate over what future awaits the Jack Russell Terrier is still going on.

Jack Russell Terriers produce about 4-8 puppies in a litter. Early socialization is vital for developing balanced dogs. It is not advised to deliver puppies under the age of 8 weeks old. It is also recommended to breeders of Jack Russell Terriers to learn much about their puppies' would-be owners.
