The AKC has offered the official breed standard that is adhered to by many breeders. It represents a picture of an ideal Jack Russell Terrier and lays stress on the original appearance of the breed. The standard is meant to distinguish between long-legged and short-legged Jack Russell Terriers.

According to the standard, the Jack Russell Terrier, or the Parson Russell Terrier (new breed name effective from April 1, 2003) should have a compactly build body. The height of the dog should come close to 12-14 inches in both males and females. Jack Russells slightly bigger or smaller do not lose scores on the condition their appearance generally conforms to the stated ideal.

Jack Russell Terriers come in two coat varieties - smooth coats and broken ones. Both types have wiry hairs lying closely to the body. These double-coated dogs can live outdoors in countries with moderate climates. Generally, Jack Russells are easy to care for. Dead hairs are removed by the means of brushing. Broken coats may need to be trimming occasionally.

If properly cared for, Jack Russell Terriers can live to be 13-15 years old.
